General description of the collection: The Latimer family papers include materials from Joseph A., Robert E., and Thomas P. Latimer. Joseph A. Latimer papers include 3 letters (August 3, 1863, and May 16 and August 27, 1864) on garrison life and counterguerrilla activities around Fort Donelson and Clarksville, Tennessee and a map of the battlefield of Dover, Tennessee. A complete run of the eleven numbers of THE 83RD ILLINOISAN (a regimental newspaper from March-May, 1865), is found which reported military activities, summarizing the unit's history, and carrying original and some borrowed literary pieces. There is also a copy of THE VICKSBURG DAILY CITIZEN (July 2-4, 1863) containing entries by both Confederates and Federal editors. Robert E. Latimer papers consist of 5 letters: one of July 9, 1939, concerns ROTC service at Fort Riley; one of July 7, 1941, recounts his experiences as post exchange officer at Fort Leonard Wood; and one of June 13, 1944, describes experiences at Camp Beale, California; and two from September 29, 1944, and January 28, 1974, outline his service in the capture of Angaur. Thomas P. Latimer papers consist of a poem written by Thomas in 1862 concerning the battle of Shiloh.

Joseph A. Latimer was a corporal in the 83rd Illinois Infantry Regment and Thomas P. Latimer was a private in the 55th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the United States (U.S.) Civil War. Robert E. Latimer was a cadet in the Reserve Officers Training Corps program (ROTC), University of Iowa; 1st lieutenant, 29th U.S. Engineer Training Battalion; and a captain in the 1138th U.S. Engineer Combat Group during World War II (WWII).
